Last week found me in Kampala where I went to visit a cousin. What struck me as I entered her place was the décor in her modest living room.
This is a house for single people, and I realised that these are the kind of homes that we are missing here in Kigali, it is very hard to find a small flat for the singles, but then with the fast pace development I hope they will soon be available.
As I was welcomed in, I sat myself on a very comfortable and stylish one arm chaise lounge. I must agree that the chaise made the décor in the living room very stylish.
Chaise lounge was not commonly used in many homes, unlike the bar lounges, but now they can be spotted in some homes.
In fact those days, chaise lounges were only spotted in homes for the rich, where such pieces were made for the ladies of the homes which they used when taking afternoon siestas, or when they wanted to take a rest in the comfort of their living rooms without having to go to the bedrooms.
For those who have no idea what it is, a chaise lounge is a combination between a chair and a day bed. It is an elegant piece of furniture that can complement any living room or bedroom decor.
These pieces are available in a wide variety of fabrics, such as leather, velvet and chenille, among many others.
Unlike the past chaise lounges, these modern chaise lounges have been perfected to fit in the present. Depending on one’s preference, chaise lounges come in different styles;
One Arm Chaise Lounges
A wide variety of modern chaise lounges feature only one arm on either the right or left side of the chaise.
These are reminiscent of the traditional chaises from Victorian times, in which the piece would be placed in a corner of the room for a lady to rest upon, while her dress pooled around her.
The one arm provided enough support for resting and had a stylish asymmetrical look. Modern ones have the same features but are more streamlined with clean shapes.
Armless Chaise Lounges
A chaise without arms promotes the clean, streamlined design of the Modern period. These chaises are designed in an ergonomic manner to fit the body. They easily hold the reclining figure, negating the need for arms. The back supports the head and neck, while the seat supports the body and lower body.
Day Bed Chaise Lounges
This type of modern chaise features a head and foot. It often serves as a bench, as the ends act as arms. These are not as freeform and do not support reclining as easily. They are designed for sitting upright while reading or watching television, as opposed to reclining at rest.
The seat is flat, not moulded to the body, and the head and foot are straight. These models are often upholstered to soften the hard frame.
Amorphous Shaped Chaise Lounges
A different style of chaise lounge that is also considered modern is the organic, curvilinear shaped model. These may have a single arm, two arms or be armless altogether.
The main feature of this style is the shape. It can come in any colour and will blend with any type of decor, while some of the other more modern versions may appear minimalist.
These are usually comfortable, upholstered pieces that are a statement unto themselves.
Whichever one chooses; chaise lounges are now a must in every living room, to uplift the décor of a stylish home.
