Healthy Living: Beet oot, Good For Liver

Honestly speaking I first saw beetroots and tasted them in 1998 when I had delivered my baby girl. Having lost a lot of blood in the process of giving birth, my mother was advised about a special diet that was to be given to me. One of the things that the doctor emphasized was the use of beetroot in every food prepared for me.

I did not like the taste at first but came to love this fruit after realising its importance in my recovery.

According to information sources from the internet, beetroots originated from North Africa and grew wildly along the European and Asian seashores during the prehistoric times.

It was consumed for its various medicinal benefits and was also used as an aphrodisiac during the Roman times as it contains higher amounts of boron which is directly linked to the production of human sex hormones.

Beetroots are so beneficial to expectant women because of their source of viatmin B folate which is essential for assisting in the development of the infant’s tissue growth and spinal column. Beetroot also support healthy liver function by detoxyfying the liver.

This roundish and red fruit is also a rich source of vitamin C, essential minerals like magnesium, zinc, potassium, phosphorus, calcium and sodium, and also the B vitamins such as B1, B2, B3, B5, B6 and B9.

Beetroot juice is also said to aid in reducing blood pressure. Researchers say that a daily glass of beetroot juice can do wonders for hypertension and many cardiovascular diseases.

It also has a power to cleanse the system, purifies the blood and increases haemoglobin. Also due to Beet root’s cellulose content, it helps ease bowel movement while relieving chronic constipation.

For aging people beetroots can prevent age related blindness due to cataract because of their vitamin A and Beta-carotene properties like that in carrots. The higher content of iron in beet roots helps reactivate and regenerate red blood cells.

Also, the copper content in beet root helps make the iron to be more readily used by the body. Beetroot juice is also an excellent solvent for inorganic calcium deposits; hence it helps in treating heart problems, arterosceloris, vericose veins, hypertension and in cleaning the gall bladder and the kidneys.

Even though beet root has very high sugar content, it has a very low glycemic load, which means sugar conversion process for beet root is extremely low and this process enables stabilization of sugar levels in the blood.

Beet root might taste according to your liking, but it will be worth the effort that next time you decide to go shopping for vegetables you include beetroot on your list.
