KIGALI - The visiting Nigerian senior military officers have commended the disaster management mechanisms adopted by the government, saying that these are good strategies other African countries can learn from.

Led by Brig. Gen. Jacob Sunday Adeyemi from Nigeria’s Armed forces Command and Staff College, the group, yesterday, paid a courtesy call on the Ministry of Local Government.

The Minister of Local Government, James Musoni, highlighted the strategies government adopted in fighting disasters in the country.
 
After discussions with local government officials at the ministry’s headquarters, Adeyemi pointed out that they intend to take stock of Rwanda’s policies and implement them in their country.

"We have had interactions with the minister and other local government officials and we have learnt that Rwandans are aware of both natural and man-made disasters. This is a good lesson we have leant,” Adeyemi said.

Adeyemi disclosed that Musoni also discussed the modalities used in sensitising the population especially those who settle near hilly areas; and the policy of advising people on the appropriate construction materials to use.

The delegation is on a week-long tour under the theme: Challenges of Disaster Management to the Armed Force in Contemporary African Society.

Meanwhile, Musoni hailed the visiting delegation, saying that the country will also have a lot to benefit from them.

"We share many similarities with Nigeria. They have also been in conflicts like us; so I am confident that we shall benefit from their experience in how they contain disasters so that we can be able to learn from each other.”
