Canal Plus has donated various materials such as food, TVs, and chairs to vulnerable children in an Early Children Development centre located in Kigarama sector, Kicukiro District.
The donation was officially handed to the beneficiaries, on February 24, during an event that took place in the community center as well as the ECD compound.
Innocent Habimfura, the Country Director of Hope and Homes for Children, the non-governmental organisation that started the ECD, commended the donation of Canal Plus saying that it will contribute towards the children’s growth as well as education.
"They gave us different necessities such as sosoma flour which plays a big role in fighting malnutrition since most of the children join us suffering from it. Other donations include sugar, cups, and chairs which will facilitate children in their studies as well,” he said.
Habimfura pointed out that among the meaningful donations they received was a television set with a one-year subscription.
"That will also contribute to the education and leisure of our children through following children’s programs on canal plus and getting new skills among other benefits,” he explained.
Furthermore, he disclosed that canal plus donation is unique because they usually have sponsors from abroad only.
Habimfura disclosed that the ECD was introduced to help teen mothers get a safe place to leave their children while they worked to earn a living. The kids would also have the opportunity to learn different things, among other activities.
Speaking to The New Times, Janine Mukarusagara, a teen mother who has a child in the ECD, shared her gratitude toward canal plus for thinking about them as well as supporting them.
"We are very happy to receive such a donation. This gives us hope.”
Mukarusagara noted that her child loves cartoons but because she could not afford a television set, it was hard for him to watch them. However, she said, with the canal plus donation, the child's dream is going to be realised.
