Member of Parliament Theobald Mporanyi, has commended achievements the media industry has so far registered saying reporting has improved.

The law maker was addressing media practitioners after a two-day workshop aimed at capacity building in regard to impartiality, especially when reporting on issues related to sexual minorities, health and human rights.

"There was time when one wondered if the journalist one spoke to was the real writer of what was published,” Mporanyi said.

He noted that this would scare many from meeting journalists which also contributed to limited access to information.

The workshop was organized by the Rwanda NGO forum on AIDS and Health Promotion in collaboration with Health Development Initiative (HDI) and the Association of Journalist in the fight against AIDS (ABASIRWA).

During the workshop, there was open discussion on how to report what participants termed as "challenging issues” like ensuring that criminals’ rights are observed and reporting on issues without laws neither criminalizing nor legalizing those involved.

Dr.Aflodis Kagaba, the Executive Director of HDI, called upon the media to effectively cooperate with civil society in identifying and helping the public exercise their legal rights.
