NYARUGENGE - Nyarugenge District, on Wednesday, released a report indicating that 173 student beneficiaries of the Financing Agency for Rwanda (SFAR’s), will be dropped, after revelations that they were capable of supporting themselves.

The students were receiving monthly allowances worth Rwf 25,000 from SFAR.

The monthly stipend is reserved for students from poor families and is mostly used to cater for accommodation and meals.

According to the report, the students were part of the 590 beneficiaries from the district.

The report was compiled by a team, comprising district officials, the police and the army.

The team visited each of the beneficiaries’ family.

The report, seen by The New Times, indicates that some of the parents are prominent business operators while others hold highly paying jobs in either government or private entities.

The allowance is limited to vulnerable orphans, students with vulnerable aged parents and those whose with parentspoor parents or guardians earn less than US$300 ( Rwf 180,000) a year.

An earlier vetting of beneficiaries had left out many students, who complained that they had been unfairly dropped from the list.

The district Mayor, Solange Mukasonga, said that "those who missed the exercise should approach the district education office as soon as possible.”
