The Minister of Justice, Tharcisse Karugarama, yesterday, told representatives of Rwandan refugees in Congo-Brazzaville that the country has a professional judicial system pointing out that they should have no worries about returning home.

He made the remarks while meeting the refugees, who were accompanied by top officials from the government of Congo-Brazzaville and UNHCR representatives.

The Minister pointed out that it was the government’s obligation to protect its citizens, adding that there was no need for any Rwandan national to remain in exile yet the country is secure.

"Every Rwandan has all rights to live in their country; it’s not a favour. It’s our mandate to ensure that citizens reside in harmony and their lives are protected,” he said.

The refugee representatives are in the country as part of the ‘come and see’ programme, initiated by government to enable them witness, first hand, the actual situation on the ground.

"Go back and tell your colleagues that the country is secure and ready to welcome them. And, if the old do not want to return, let your children return home and participate in developing their nation,” Karugarama advised.

Over 1,700 Rwandan refugees are said to be living in Congo Brazzaville.
