KIGALI - FIFA presidential candidate, Prince Mohamed Bin Hammam, yesterday, met with the Prime Minister, Bernard Makuza, to seek Rwanda’s vote for the federation’s top job.

Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Hammam, who is also the Asian Football Confederation president, said that Rwandan football has progressed and hailed government support to the game.

"We as football administrators, (we) would like to see more being done to football in Rwanda,” he said.

"There is need for more infrastructure including playing fields and training centres in the capital cities and outside as well as administrative needs. I believe there are many ways we can support football in Rwanda.” he added.

Hammam, who was visiting Rwanda for the fifth time, was last in the country in 2005, when he inaugurated the GOAL Project.

He is competing with the incumbent FIFA president Sepp Blatter, who has been at the helm of world soccer’s governing body for the last 13 years.

FIFA presidential elections are set for July 1. Despite Hammam’s pledges to support Rwandan football, Prime Minister Makuza declined to reveal the candidate Rwanda would be backing. 

"It’s an honour that Hammam chose to come and campaign in Rwanda. Every decision we have to make will depend on the programmes the candidate has. He has good plans for Rwanda,” said Makuza.

He added that; "We can’t reveal our position now but our backing will be based on the programmes, and plans of the candidate.”

Hammam arrived in Rwanda, yesterday afternoon, from the Central African Republic.
