Dear Editor,

According to the Observer Sunday January 22, 2006, Bringing up a girl, to quote a Punjabi saying, is like watering a neighbor’s garden’

Dear parents, can we give a chance to our daughters to grow and prove to the world that actually if the above sayings still exist then they are totally taking us back where we have been and are pushing us to the edge?.

How is the world about to have women leaders, women decision makers, women that can bring about this change if we don’t have girls? If we don’t have girls trained to be the above? To train their siblings later where we shall not be. How is it possible to empower women without empowering girls? How is it going to happen when we cannot look at this girl as the source of change? as the source of knowledge, the future generation? The mother to be? My country calls it Tomorrow’s Rwanda (ns) "Uwanda rwejo……."

Stop telling your daughter how difficult it is to be girls, start telling her the potentialities lying in her, train her to be a bright future herself, train her to be a better girl, and a better mother tomorrow, a better wife who can hold onto her family, a better leader, after training her, allow her grow, don’t sit back, protect her, help her towards it, and get back to me when you have results on your finger tips. All daughters out there, the sky is the limit, go for it and expose what is inside of you. Prove to the world, that given chance, girls can make the world a better place to live. We have seen this, and are continuing to. God bless as we share this important role with our husbands, fathers, and brothers. Our daughters are not gardens to be decided where they belong. They are important persons that will make the world a better future, hearts of a family, hence forth, hearts of a nation.

Anything that affects a heart affects the entire person. Let’s give them a chance to prove to the world who they are!
