MUSANZE – The Intermediary Court of Musanze, yesterday, remanded a prominent Musanze businessman at Ruhengeri Central Prison, for 30 days, following his controversial remarks during the Genocide commemoration week.

Faustin Musanganya, a former lecturer, is accused of genocide ideology after he argued that the former regime was solely to blame for the Genocide and no resident should be held accountable.

He allegedly uttered the remarks during a local meeting in Gikwege settlement, Muhoza Sector.

While appearing in court, Musanganya denied harbouring genocide ideology, and instead maintained that he specified that the former government and some Hutu, had committed the Genocide.

Presiding Judge Calixte Twagiramungu, sent Musanganya to jail after prosecution asked for more time to carry out investigations.

Many residents who attended the meeting were willing to testify against him for his comments, which reportedly aimed at creating confusion and defending those who committed the Genocide.
 
According to the organic law relating to the crime of Genocide ideology, a person who trivialises or negates the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi faces a jail term of between 10 to 25 years once convicted.
