Rwandan students at the Maastricht School of Management (MsM), in the Netherlands, recently organised the 17th commemoration of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.

The ten students, together with the school management and over 70 friends, lit candles and observed a moment of silence in honour of the Genocide victims.

One of the students, Erick Shirimpumpu, said that the importance of the commemoration is to honour and remember beloved sisters, brothers, parents and neighbours who helplessly succumbed to the evil actions of the Genocide perpetrators.

"Secondly is to bring awareness to the whole world that such a tragic atrocities against humanity should be solemnly condemned and should never be allowed to happen anywhere else,,” he added.

The Rwandan envoy to the Netherlands, Immaculate Uwanyiligira, said that while Rwandans and friends remember the victims of the Genocide against the Tutsi, it was also important to make note of the tremendous achievements that Rwanda had made to lift itself from the abyss and transform itself from a country on the brink of a failed state 17 years ago.

"Now Rwandans enjoy respect among the community of nations, in the region, on the continent and the world at large,” the Ambassador observed.

Professor Aad Van Mourik, pointed out that MsM is an institution where the world almost meets adding that it was honoured to make a modest contribution towards the renaissance of Rwanda.

The Professor noted that the commemoration of a dark page in the history of Rwanda would bring inspirations to the MsM community, to continue on the path of investing in people not only to further their careers but also to make the world a better place.
