The former Minister of Health, Dr Richard Sezibera was, this week, sworn-in as the Secretary General of the East African Community (EAC).

The regional bloc has seen five countries join hands to work towards establishing a prosperous, competitive and secure East Africa.

With a mission to widen and deepen Economic, Political, Social and Culture integration in order to improve the quality of life of its people, the EAC, so far, is without doubt, on the right track.

The community has achieved a lot in the last couple of years, with a number of protocols already signed and various trade barriers eliminated. But there is still more that needs to get done, if the people are to enjoy the full benefits of integration.

The incoming Secretary General will, therefore, have to continue from the already established foundation laid by his predecessor, to ensure that any impediments are done away with to help establish the region an investment destination for multinational companies as well support local investors reap from the integration process.

And, with other countries like the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Southern Sudan expressing interest in joining the bloc, the EAC is bound to expand, something that comes along with greater challenges as well as insurmountable opportunities that the new EAC leadership will have to exploit for the benefit of the people.

There is no doubt that the man entrusted with this important office will deliver, given his track record, and will, of course, count on teamwork to ensure that the over 120 million citizen of EAC benefit from the integration.
