The Rwandan Diaspora in Djibouti on April 14, joined their counterparts around the world to commemorate the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.

The event, which was organised by the Association of Rwandans in Djibouti (AMIRWA) was also attended by Djiboutian people and friends of Rwanda living and working in the Horn of Africa country.

According to Theobard Nshimiyumuremyi, a member of AMIRWA, the day began with an evening mass at the Main Cathedral of Djibouti, presided over the Monsignor of Diocese of Djibouti.

"During the mass, participants prayed for the victims of the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi, their families and survivors. Prayers were also dedicated to Rwanda to continue the current path of development, unity and reconciliation,” Nshimiyumuremyi said.

After the mass, the Rwandan community in Djibouti and friends of Rwanda participated in a talk show at Hotel Imperial that focused on the genocide that took place in Rwanda.

Discussions rotated around the failure of the international community to halt the genocide and the United Nations abandonment of Rwanda at her hour of need.

Also debated were events in Ivory Coast, Libya, Somalia and Yemen, among others, where similar events could easily turn into a catastrophic situation. 
 

AMIRWA was created to bring together the increasing number of Rwandans living or working in Djibouti. Every year in April, it organises commemoration events in memory of the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi.
