Rwanda has been nominated for both this year’s Energy Globe Award as well as the Future Policy Award in recognition of its environmental protection policies.
A project by a local women’s association to remove water hyacinth in Lake Bugesera, has been selected for the Energy Globe Award in the ‘Water’ category. Water hyacinth makes fishing almost impossible while increasing the prevalence of malaria.

Rwanda’s law banning the, production, importation, sale and use of polythene bags has led to the country’s nomination for the Future Policy Award by the World Future Council.
 
The Minister of Environment and Lands, Stanislas Kamanzi, welcomed the nominations.

"Our environment is a vital but fragile resource. Our growing population will always need clean water and fresh air, and so it is critical to protect our environment and properly manage Rwanda’s natural resources. We are a nation with a common vision and everyone has a role in achieving it,” Kamanzi said.
