THE Confederation of central African football (Cecafa) has invited Al Ahly of Egypt and Liberty Professionals from Ghana to spice up this year’s edition of the Kagame Cup Club Championship slated from June 21 – July 5 in Sudan.

Cecafa’s Secretary General Nicholas Musonye believes Al Ahly and Liberty Professionals inclusion makes the tournament more competitive.

"We have talked to these two clubs and they are willing to be part of the competition,” Musonye said.

The tournament which will jointly be played in Khartoum and Port Sudan has attracted a lucrative sponsorship package of $800,000 (Rwf473.6m).
Juba stadium is currently under renovation.

The sponsorship will cover air-tickets for all participating teams, Cecafa officials and referees. The money will also cover full board accommodation for all delegations and local transport and other logistics.

The tournament will be sponsored by El Mereikh Group of companies whose President Jamal Alwaly has acknowledged the event should be given its rightful place in the Cecafa calendar.

President Paul Kagame of Rwanda has sponsored the event to the tune of $60,000 as prize money while the sponsors have agreed to top up with US 40,000 to be shared among the top three teams.

Defending champions APR and Etincelles will lead Rwanda’s hunt for pride as they battle fourteen other clubs from the region.The draw will be held on May 1 in Nairobi.
