The president of IBUKA, Dr. Jean Pierre Dusingizemungu, has said that this year’s commemoration period recorded fewer cases of trauma compared to previous years.
Ibuka is the Umbrella organization of Genocide Survivors’ associations.

Dusingizemungu made the remarks, yesterday, as the country concluded the national mourning week for victims of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.
Previously, many trauma cases were recorded during this period, especially among survivors.

However, according to Dusingizemungu, several strategies were put in place to ensure minimal cases of trauma and those that came up were effectively managed.

"We previously didn’t have the best ways of managing these cases, but this time, we conducted a nationwide sensitisation; it is now a concern for everybody, that’s why we recorded very few cases,” he said.

Regarding the security of survivors during the commemoration, Dusingizemungu said that there were few cases of intimidation compared to previous years.

"The most serious case we received is that of a man who hacked his wife because she had attended a commemoration function,” he revealed.

According to Police statistics, there were 25 reported cases that exhibited the Genocide ideology during the past seven days.
