The country’s premier beverage manufacturer, Bralirwa, yesterday handed over a cheque worth Rwf5m to members of Unity Club towards the completion of Cyanika Genocide Memorial Site in Nyamagabe District.

The Managing Director of Bralirwa, Sven Piederiet, handed over the cheque to Unity Club which was represented by Senator Aloysia Inyumba.

Unity Club is non-profit organisation made of current and former ministers and their spouses and targets empowerment of vulnerable Rwandans besides promoting unity and reconciliation.

Speaking at the handover, Piederiet said that the donation was part of the brewery’s corporate social responsibility programs that are in line with the 17th commemoration of the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi.

"I take this opportunity to wish the whole Rwandan population and the government hope and strength during this period of commemoration,”

"It is with great honour and respect that Bralirwa joins the Unity Club in such an initiative that restores the genocide victim’s dignity and to ensure that such tragic events will never happen again,” Piederiet said.

On behalf of Unity Club, Inyumba thanked Bralirwa for supporting the activities of Unity Club, particularly the completion of the Cyanika site, which will cost Rwf60m.

Through the First Lady Jeanette Kagame, the residents of Cyanika requested the Unity Club to carry out advocacy to facilitate the completion of the site, which will provide a decent burial of over 25, 000 people killed during the genocide.

Senator Inyumba said that several other organisations and institutions had pledged to donate to the club to raise the required amount.

Among other things, Inyumba said that the Unity Club helps in supporting the social welfare of vulnerable families, including genocide survivors of Cyanika by donating cows to households and constructing houses as part of the drive.
