Local communities play a leading role in curbing crimes, a city police officer has said. Kicukiro Assistant Superintendent of Police Bosco Rutishisha urged residents to identify those who abet crimes.

Rutishisha made the appeal over the weekend during an awareness workshop about community policing held in Niboye Sector, Kicukiro District.

The Executive Secretary of Niboye Sector, Joyce Muteteri, has complained in the past of increased crime cases in the district. Local leaders say community policing will help to beef up security in the area.

Muteteri also said that there is need for more police constables in order to stamp out theft in the district.

She said that community policing, a new system used for security in developed countries like Japan and China where it has helped beef security, provides people with information about crime prevention.

She stressed that there’s a need for individual citizens to solve their own problems instead of waiting for police.

"Participation of civilians in crime prevention must increase,” she said.
