The Permanent Representative of Rwanda to the UN, Eugene-Richard Gasana, has called on the international community to stand against hatred and divisionism as a way of preventing any other Genocide from happening gain.

Gasana made the remarks during the 17th Commemoration of the Genocide against the Tutsi, organised by the United Nations at its headquarters in New York.

He noted that only the most depraved of humanity would disagree with the right to remember the victims and the responsibility to protect targeted populations from a future Genocide.

"Remembering and learning from the past, educating in the present, and advocating for the future will gain results that have eluded us so far,” he told the UN.

During the function, Gasana discussed Rwanda’s position on the ongoing uprising in Libya and Ivory Coast, saying that Rwanda fully supports resolutions adopted to protect civilians in Libya and Côte d’Ivoire.

"Perhaps the most important lesson from the Genocide is that remembrance includes the responsibility to educate. Learning lessons from the past is part of the common legacy of those targeted for extermination.”

Gasana also recognised the UN’s support to Rwanda and the Genocide survivors saying that various UN departments and agencies have come to the aid and comfort of the survivors since 1994.
