STOCKHOLM : The Charge d’Affaires, a.i, of the Rwandan Embassy to Sweden, Evode Mudaheranwa,  has said that the best way to honour the memory of the victims of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi is to ensure that they did not die in vain, is by helping rebuild and develop the country they loved.

Mudaheranwa made the remarks, Thursday, while addressing a solemn gathering of the Rwandan community in Sweden to remember victims of the Genocide.
He stressed the importance of having a united and powerful Diaspora in the Nordic Countries.

"A united Diaspora speaking with one strong voice, is a powerful front in the fight to uphold the truth and preserve the dignity that Rwandans deserve,” Mudaheranwa told the gathering, citing this year’s theme; "Upholding the Truth: Preserving Our Dignity”.

"A few individuals out there are bent on revising our country’s history, at any cost. Dignity and truth is the least of their concerns. Their words and actions are an affront to the memory of our beloved ones and an insult to the work we have done to rebuild our nation," he added.
Various members of the diaspora in Sweden spoke about the extent of the atrocities committed during the Genocide and the physical as well as mental devastation left in its path.

The commemoration also included the filming of the Rwandan-produced documentary: Keepers of Memory, a moment of silence, as well as a candle-lighting event.
At the height of the Genocide in Rwanda, the growing community of Rwandans in Sweden held several demonstrations in the Swedish capital to denounce the Habyarimana regime and its international backers.

Some of the demonstrations were held outside Embassies of countries close to the genocidal government.
The Rwandan Embassy to Sweden organised the genocide commemoration for the fourth year in a row. The Diaspora in Denmark held its commemoration on Friday while Norway will observe it today.
