Editor,
I wish to respond to a letter by Timothy Gasana that appeared in yesterday’s issue of The NewTimes titled: "our struggle was not in vain.” Indeed, 17years after the Genocide against theTutsi, a lot has been achieved. The country has been transformed and Rwanda is one of the best governed countries in the World today.
The democratization process after the genocide has yielded results and public service delivery is very impressive. The current leadership has united all Rwandans and facilitated those in exile to return home. The Rwandan people today, enjoy equal rights.
Under Habyarimana’s genocidal regime, oppression, discrimination and favoritism ruled. Today, all Rwandans get jobs on merit. Under Habyarimana’s, divisive government, certain individuals were above the law and would commit crimes that went unpunished. Today, everyone suspected of a crime goes to court to prove their innocence, no matter their seniority or background.
Indeed, during the struggle to liberate our country, we lost gallant soldiers but their death was not in vain. They died so that all Rwandans enjoy freedom and gain their dignity.
