April 7 is here, and once again, the nation will commence a week into which we honour more than one million innocent victims who were killed during the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.

As usual, this week will be characterised by various activities ranging from visiting and comforting the survivors to according decent burial to victims.

Many organisations will, during this period, engage in activities aimed at reaching out to survivors, including families of their fallen employees.
The kind of assistance that needs to be offered to these survivors should be more sustainable. What they require is skills that will enable them fend for themselves, rather than handouts.

We should also take seriously this year’s theme; Upholding the Truth, Preserving our Dignity’ as a weapon against the genocide deniers and revisionists, as well as their apologists who have been working to distort the facts about what happened 17 years ago.

The commemoration should also be a reminder to the international community of their moral obligation to help Rwandans in healing their wounds, and this can only be done through bringing to book the authors of the Genocide who continue to roam freely around the World.
