AVEGA-Agahozo, an association of genocide widows has trained hundreds of people to manage trauma cases that may arise during the commemoration period.
Rwanda has, today, officially started the 17th commemoration of the Genocide.

Odette Kayirere, the AVEGA Executive Secretary, said that most association members and other volunteers are trained on how to handle psycho-social issues and trauma.

"We have counselors and psycho-social workers in each sector of the whole country ready, to deal with any cases (trauma),” Kayirere said.

Christine Mukamugenzi, the Chairperson of AVEGA in the Eastern  province, called on all Rwandans to assist genocide survivors during the commemoration period.

"Single mothers, fathers and genocide orphans living alone should be visited and comforted during this time,” Mukamugenzi said, noting "Traumatic events can fundamentally change not only victims' way of life, but also their psychological welfare.”
