As events to mark, for the 17th time, the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, begin today, IBUKA, the Umbrella body of Genocide survivors’ associations, has warned against using insensitive talk about the Genocide.

Jean Pierre Dusingizimana, the president of IBUKA, also called upon all Rwandans to participate in the weeklong series of events organized to commemorate the Genocide.

"Our message is to call upon everyone to participate in commemorative activities during this period; offer sustainable assistance to vulnerable survivors and provide credible information about what took place during the Genocide.”

"Everyone should understand that they have a role to play in helping trauma victims. Do not ignore them, listen to them,” Dusingizimana said, adding that in cases of trauma, people should help the victims access qualified medical personnel.

IBUKA is planning countrywide events, including radio talk shows and visits to institutions of higher learning.

Rwandans and friends of Rwanda across the globe have organized commemoration events that include exhibitions, video shows, prayers and night vigils.

 The National Commission for the Fight against Genocide (CNLG) launched a ‘Genocide Exhibition’ as part of the preparations for the 17th commemoration of the Genocide.

The week-long exhibition is taking place at the national stadium.
