Editor,
It is now two days since Rwanda Utilities Regulatory Authority (RURA) announced that Rwandatel had lost its mobile operation licence.
The closure will not hurt everybody. Other telecom companies, for example, stand to gain- in part because they are rushing to enlist stranded Rwandatel subscribers.
However, I request the Ministry of Finance to expedite the search for other players in the telcoms industry. Rwandatel’s closure diminishes the benefits of having various mobile telecom companies. However I am sure other companies are interested.
Mobile phone subscribers were enjoying lower call charges due to competition.
Staff, subscribers, sale agents have all been affected.
The closure of Rwandatel should not affect the penetration targets of mobile communications.
