The Rwandan High Commission in India has organized Genocide commemoration events that will see about 1,200 people participate.The events are part of the 17th anniversary of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.

A communiqué from India says the High Commission organized events across five Indian states, with the main event taking place in New Delhi, the capital.

In New Delhi, exhibitions, video shows, prayers, and candle lighting will characterize the event that will attract Rwandans, top Indian government officials, diplomats, and friends of Rwanda.

Most Rwandans living in India are students in the country’s southern states and the High Commission’s officials plan to travel to four particular locations there.

The four locations include: Annamalai University in Tamil Nadu state; Symbiosis International University, Jain University Global Campus in Bangalore and at Carmel Convention Centre in Salem City.

The statement says Williams Nkurunziza, the High Commissioner, in his speech, will lay emphasis on this year’s theme ‘upholding the truth, preserving our dignity.’

Archbishop Salvatore Pennachio, the Apostolic Nuncio to India, will lead the prayers while a message from the UN Secretary General, Ban Ki-moon, will be read by Kiran Mehra, a UN official in New Delhi.
