DAR ES SALAAM- Rwandans from across Tanzania will, on Thursday,  take part in "Walk to Remember” in memory of those who lost their lives during the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.

The Walk is part of commemoration activities to mark the 17 anniversary of the Genocide.

Rwanda’s High Commissioner to Tanzania, Fatuma Ndangiza, yesterday said the walk will attract hundreds of people from East African countries as well as Rwandans living in the Diaspora.

"The ‘Walk to Remember’ will stretch from the World Cinema in Dar es Salaam to the Milimani City hall and we have mobilized over 700 youth to take part in the event,” Ndangiza said.

"We are promoting local ownership of this event by involving youth under the Peace and Love Proclaimers-Tanzania chapter.”

The Commemoration event, which is organized in conjunction with the UN, will be presided over by Tanzania’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Bernard Membe, at the Milimani City hall.

Other activities lined up include a public lecture at the University of Dar es Salaam’s faculty of human rights, and a lecture at the Tumaini University in Iringa.

"The lectures will focus on lessons learnt from the Genocide as well as achievements registered so far,” Ndangiza said.

Meanwhile, Noun Bandyandora, the vice president of the Rwandan Diaspora in Arusha, yesterday, said that over 1,000 people will participate in  the Walk that will begin from Sheikh Amri Abeid stadium up to the Arusha International Conference Centre (AICC).

East African Community (EAC) Secretary General, Juma Mwapachu, is expected to preside over the event.

Other speakers lined up include; the ICTR Registrar Adama Dieng, ICTR Prosecutor Hassan Bubacar Jallow and the Registrar of the East African Court of Justice, Dr. John Ruhangisa.
