This was revealed by the EAC Deputy Secretary General in charge of Planning and Infrastructure, Alloys Mutabingwa, who said that discussions are currently going on with various agencies to identify experts who will put the project together.
"After the meeting of experts, we shall soon begin developing a regional coordination framework of how the plan will be implemented,” Mutabingwa said.
A feasibility study was conducted in 2009 to identify the most affordable power the region needs over a 25-year period (2013 to 2038).
"We have a joint commitment between EAC countries, the World Bank and the African Development Bank to ensure efficiency. We don’t want to end at planning, we want to act together to deliver on the plans,” Mutabingwa explained.
The Regional Power Master Plan and Grid Code will cover 10 countries from the region: Burundi, DRC, Djibouti, Egypt, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Sudan, Tanzania and Uganda.
The master plan will form the basis for future expansion of the power system while the Grid Code will govern technical design and operation of interconnections for power exchange in the region.
