KIGALI -The German government, through its Development Bank, yesterday signed an agreement worth €5.5m (approx Rwf4.6bn) with the  Common Development Fund (CDF).

The CDF Director, Laetitia Nkunda, promised to use the funds towards activities that will improve living conditions.

"We shall finance district based-infrastructure projects, which are in line with the decentralization system. This includes road construction, water supply and rural electrification among others,” Nkunda said.

She noted that similar to other financial agreements with the German government, CDF will focus on poverty reduction and rural development.

Dr. Stephan Klingebiel, the Country Director of the German Development Bank, said that they recognise efforts by CDF in implementing its plans towards development, especially in its crucial support to improve lives in rural areas.

 "Ever since we started working together, there has been tremendous development which proves commitment on behalf of the fund,” he said.

The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Local Government, Cyrille Turatsinze, said the support portrays the good relationship the two governments enjoy.

"For the last five years, the German government has injected more than Euros 12m in the implementation of the country`s decentralization policy,” Turatsinze said.

He pointed out that the funds come at the right moment, saying activities, including feasibility studies and supervision works, will be carried out effectively.
