KIGALI - The Chinese embassy in Kigali, yesterday, paid tribute to fallen Chinese nationals who died in Rwanda.
Some of them were killed during the genocide, while others died due to health complications.
The commemoration was in line with China’s festival which falls on April 5, where the country remembers its departed citizens, both in China and across the world.
The festival, dubbed ‘Qing Ming’, is part of the Chinese tradition of showing respect to the dead.
Speaking at the event in Rulindo District, where at least 10 Chinese were laid to rest, the Chinese Ambassador, Shu Zhan, explained that the event is in honour of the dead Chinese’ contribution to the country.
"These people contributed a lot in the past few decades, especially in the development programmes,” said Zhan, adding that local people should continue with the same spirit and build on what was started by the deceased.
He commended the Rwandan government for its good relations and for creating a safe environment for foreigners.
