MUHANGA- Women in Nyarusange Sector, Muhanga District have hailed Women for Women (WWI) project for its training support and starting up micro finance projects that have improved their social welfare.

The women made the remarks during the graduation ceremony of over 500 women who had completed training in various life skills in Nyarusange, last week.

The women have also been financially supported over the last year, bringing the total number of women who have benefited to 36,000 countrywide.

The ceremony was presided over by, Caritas Mukankusi, country director of Women for Women International, who said that the project has enabled women to acquire skills to survive, and improve their social status.

"The objective is to promote women with capacity to work hard towards development and self sustainability. The financial support will enable the women to start up projects based on the acquired technical skills,” Mukankusi said.

Julienne Uwambaye, one of the beneficiaries, testified that the project has enabled her to construct a modern house after years of living in a grass thatched house.

"I used the funds to start a piggery, and joined other savings groups, which enabled me to work hard and transform my welfare with the help of the project funds,” Uwambaye said.

Other women said that the project has educated them on various ways of income generating skills, fighting HIV/Aids and hygiene, gender equality and women’s rights, among others.

Local leaders requested that the organisation builds a classroom to facilitate a good learning environment and follow up the growth and development of the women’s groups so as to disseminate the skills among other women in the district.
