More than 100 students from 19 universities, over the weekend, completed a four-day training in conflict management, ahead of the 17th commemoration of the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi.

The course that was facilitated by the National Unity and Reconciliation commission (NURC) aims at solving conflicts related to genocide ideology among university students.

"The training focused on the forthcoming commemoration, the history of Rwanda that must be understood, and post-genocide Rwanda,” said Dr. Jean Baptiste Habyarimana, the Executive Secretary of NURC.  

Habyarimana emphasized the importance of the training which, he said, will enable the trained students sensitize their colleagues about the commemoration and the country’s development agenda.

The course was hailed by students who said it was timely.
"We had conflicts among students especially during elections of students’ councils. We also have increased cases of trauma among survivors during the commemoration week. With the training, we can now help address these challenges,” said Jean Marie Vianney Twahirwa, head of the reconciliation club at the School of Finance and Banking.
