Rwamagana – African Evangelistic Enterprise (AEE), this week, rewarded various families in Rwamagana District for maintaining proper sanitation in homes.

Pastor Ezekiel Rukema, the coordinator of AEE, who organised the training and competition, said the awards were part of a wider campaign to ensure healthy living in rural communities.

"Most of the diseases in rural areas reflect low hygiene standards. Today, we are rewarding families with extremely clean homes, something that should motivate others to do the same,” he said.

Rwamagana Mayor, Nehemie Uwimana, echoed similar remarks, and warned residents against the habit of sharing drinking straws.

"Diarrhoea, malaria, skin rush, teeth decay and worms are all due to poor hygiene in homes and their environs,” he said.

"It is very disturbing to see that you have refused to desist from sharing drinks in one container...with such behavior, you are at a high risk of contracting tuberculosis”.

Felicien Gatabazi, whose family emerged the best in the competition, said maintaining cleanliness, demanded hard work and abandoning some traditional lifestyles.
