Prisons staff in charge of production in all the 14 prisons in the country, Friday concluded a one-week training in animal husbandry.
The training that was conducted by Rwanda Animal Resources Development Authority (RARDA) aimed at equipping the staff with modern skills that will help them in nurturing the prisons’ animals such as cows, goats, among others, so that the animal products fetch more on the market.
Speaking at the event, Mary Gahonzire the Commissioner General of Prisons, said that the training would provide skills to those in charge of production and increase animal product output in the prisons.
"The prisons’ target is to be self sustainable, and we cannot sustain ourselves without improving on the production. That is why our staff has been given the expertise to increase on the production,” she added.
Gahonzire revealed that they (prisons) entered a memorandum of understanding with RARDA to extend their expertise to the prisons staff in charge of production.
She called upon the trainees to pass the skills to the inmates who are involved in farming.
