KIGALI - President Paul Kagame yesterday received the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Luxembourg, Jean Asselborn.

They held talks on a number of issues, mainly on bilateral cooperation between Rwanda and the European nation, as well as the situation in Libya.

Speaking to the press after the meeting, Asselborn said that Luxembourg and Rwanda share a history of cooperation dating back to the 60’s where the former provides development support by funding several projects in health and agricultural sectors.

"Currently we have some areas of cooperation, for instance in the fight against HIV/Aids through the Ministry of Health. We also have an irrigation project we support and we really want to continue with this cooperation,” Asselborn said.

On the political scene, Asselborn said that he discussed with the President about the cooperation between the two countries and also had a "fruitful discussion” on Libya.

"We spoke a lot about Libya and the UN resolution 1973 and we have an identity of views,” Asselborn said.

"A country like Rwanda is an example to show that the international community cannot look in another direction when people are being killed by their own government,” he added.

He noted that his visit to the Genocide Memorial centre to see, with his own eyes, the impact of the Genocide, made him realize how important it was for the international community to step in and avoid a situation similar to that in Rwanda in 1994, happening in Libya.

He said that his country and Europe share views with Rwanda backing the UN Resolution to impose a no-fly zone on Libya.

Asselborn said that he was impressed by the country’s progress, politically and economically.

According to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Louise Mushikiwabo, the Deputy PM is visiting the continent to strengthen relations between his country and several African countries.
