KARONGI – Students going back home after the closure of the first school term, were  yesterday stranded in Karongi District due to insufficient number of public transport vehicles along the Kigali-Karongi highway.

There are only three travel agencies that normally ply the route and yesterday there weren’t no enough vehicles to cope with the surge in the number of passengers.

"I have been here since morning but there is no hope of getting a vehicle to take me back home. My school is also far from here, I can’t go back,” Grace Uwimana, a student heading to Rubavu District said.

Just like Uwimana, most of the affected students were travelling to the countryside.

Another worried student, Esther Munyeri, a senior two student at Ngoma Secondary School in Karongi, lamented that she had spent two nights at a classmate’s home with little hope of travelling home.

However, an official from Capital Express transport agency, insisted that students should not worry, assuring they would do their best to transport the students to their respective destinations.

"We are determined to work until very late in the evening if that’s what it takes to have the students get to their homes,” the official said.
