HUYE — University students should seize the diverse opportunities presented by the internet to create jobs, a government official has said.

The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of ICT in the President’s Office, David Kanamugire, was, on Wednesday, addressing students at the National University of Rwanda (NUR).

He told students that in today’s technological world, Internet is a key opportunity that one can exploit and make significant gains.

Giving the example of Facebook and Google, he said innovation and global internet business can build strong entrepreneurs.

Kanamugire called for self-confidence, determination and originality.

"We want you to exploit resources, opportunities and create businesses and have them online,” he said. "Engage in creating, innovating and generating new businesses that you can sell around the world. Use the opportunities we have to create wealth and jobs.”

Kanamugire added: "The core value of the internet is not to connect you with your roommate. You need to take part in what happens in the world; you must be active participants in the global business and in whatever happens around you.”

The PS noted that Rwanda will soon connect to "the fastest broadband ever which will be a great opportunity to a prompt connection with the world and an opportunity to sell ideas and products to the world.”

Recently, the government announced the completion of the first phase of the installation of Fibre Optic Cable, which will help cut costs and increase the speed of internet connectivity.
