NYAGATARE- Staff from Bweranyangye Girls’ Secondary School in Uganda planted over 300 trees at SOPEM Rukomo Secondary School in Nyagatare.

The exercise, meant to boost environmental conservation campaign in the area, was carried out under ‘Connecting classrooms’, a British Council-supported programme that builds partnerships between schools in the UK and others around the world.

The 70-member delegation from Bweranyangye, together with their hosts, later discussed how to strengthen cooperation.

Jennifer Mwesigwa, who led a delegation from Bweranyangyi Girls’ School, noted that environmental protection is part of connecting classrooms programme. She hailed Rukomo schools for embracing the English language.

Robert Gasana, the head teacher of SOPEM Rukomo Secondary School, told The New Times that their cooperation also helps them share teaching experiences.

"We have gained a lot through this partnership, like developing students’ centred teaching methods. This is a system derived from UK schools and it has been successfully applied here,” he said.

The schools under ‘Connecting classrooms’ in Nyagatare district include Mirama Secondary School, Rwisirabo and SOPEM. Others are schools in UK and in Bushenyi District in western Uganda.
