KIGALI - Close to 500 Sector, Cell and village leaders from Kicukiro and Gasabo Districts are taking part in a two-day training aimed at curbing crimes related to Gender Based Violence (GBV) within their communities.  

The training was organized by Rwanda National Police through Isange One Stop Centre, a department attached to the Kacyiru Police Hospital that specializes in GBV cases. 

The Director of the hospital, Dr ACP Daniel Nyamwasa, noted that over the past five years, more than 12,000 women were victims of GBV. Most of the cases reported include, rape, torture and infidelity.

Nyamwasa urged participants to help GBV victims get to the Isange One Stop Centre for medical and judicial services. He added that, by the end of 2011, local leaders from across the country will be trained in prevention gender violence.

Paul Jules Ndamage, the Mayor of Kicukiro District, commended the Police for its commitment to address GBV. He urged local leaders to collaborate with the police by providing timely information regarding domestic violence.

The Police operate a toll free number, 3512, where GBV cases can be reported.
