KIGALI - Ahead of the 17th Commemoration of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, Rwanda National Police (RNP) informs the public that the security situation in the country is calm and that security will be guaranteed during the commemoration period.

The police force and other security organs are determined to ensure that nothing destabilizes the prevailing security, and cooperation with the citizens through community policing remains vital in this endeavour.

The prevailing security is not a result of our job alone but also from the fact that the people police themselves and this is the kind of partnership and vigilance we expect in the coming days.

Despite a series of grenades attacks in the recent months, a partnership between the police and other security organs and the people ensured that the perpetrators were apprehended and their terrorist acts brought to an end.

Recently, three more people suspected of plotting the attacks aimed at destabilizing security were arrested. The suspects are linked to the network of people behind the recent spell of grenade attacks.

Also arrested is a Lecturer at the National University of Rwanda (NUR), Lambert Havugintwari, who is suspected to be part of the racket.

Havugimana was arrested by security operatives on February 9 in Butare town, Huye District in the Southern Province.

His family was informed of the arrest and his vehicle was handed over to his family. Havugimana is being held at Remera police station where his family can visit him.

The public is advised to remain vigilant and report any suspicious individuals to the nearest authorities.
