Rwanda Utility Regulatory Agency (RURA) is urging operators in the transport sector to observe and adhere to the rules and regulations guiding their trade.

Benjamin Rutimirira, from the Economic Affairs department in RURA, made the appeal yesterday, while meeting 70 members of a new transport cooperative called "URUGENDO RWIZA” in Rubavu District.

"Transporters are required to observe the rules and regulations set by regulatory authorities if they are to succeed,” said Rutimirira.

He noted that many transport operators are ignorant of the rules and regulations governing them which necessitate more sensitisation.

Kudra Mutarugera, an advisor of Urugendo Rwiza, said the sensitisation meeting was important for the members in regard to regulations.

"When we started our cooperative, we didn’t have a license from RURA and other necessary requirements because we didn’t know the rules,” he said.

Other areas in which the members were urged to develop is the formulation of business plans, maintenance (mechanical conditions) of vehicles as well as dress code for drivers.

"Unlike before, our cooperative aims to develop transport service and establish a pension scheme for our members,” added Mutarugera.

RURA advises transporters to form cooperatives in order to effectively manage their industry as well as realising benefits.
