KIGALI - The Minister of Internal Security, Musa Fazil Harerimana, yesterday, toured Kigali Central Prison, commonly known as ‘1930’.

The visit is part of his scheduled tour to all prison facilities countrywide to assess their general conditions.

Harerimana, accompanied by the Commissioner General of Prisons, Mary Gahonzire, said that he was impressed by the conditions.

Addressing the inmates, the Minister said that the facility will, this year, relocate to Butamwa, Nyarugenge District, to pave way for development of the land where it is currently located, which is prime for real estate development.

"Before this year ends, the male inmates will be transferred to Butamwa while the female inmates will be taken to Remera Prison in Kimironko,” he said.
Harerimana added that the new facility will also accommodate male inmates from Remera.

He called on the prisoners to provide a list of their visitors so as to avoid  unwanted guests.

"This will make it easy for prison wardens to know if the people who have come to visit you are on the list,” he told the inmates.

Gahonzire hailed the inmates for being productive by engaging in income generating activities like carpentry and tailoring.

"Some of the inmates are playing a great role of correcting their colleagues in the prison and it is evidenced in the reports I usually receive from the prison, "she said.

The prisoners requested to be located to prisons near their communities so that they can serve their sentences closer to their families.
