I totally agree with Patrice Mulama, the Executive Secretary of the Media High Council (MHC), that government leaders should work hand-in-hand with media institutions if they are to achieve their targeted development objectives and promote good governance.

Some government leaders deny information to journalists and have continued to look at them as their enemies, instead of treating them as partners. Leaders ought to realize that denying journalists information only creates room for speculation.

I am certain that once media are involved, the public get to know what is happening in the country and are able to take decisions from an informed point of view. How else would the public get to know what their leaders are doing without involving the media?

I think it’s only leaders who fail to account to their electorate that shy away from journalists.

Therefore, the Media High Council, which is the media regulatory body, has a big task to sensitize government leaders on why they have to engage the media. Sometimes, these local leaders don’t know the role of the media in national development.
