Over 670, 000 households get access to clean water

About 672, 500 families nationwide have been connected to clean water with the new water supply and sanitation installations put in place during commemoration of the Water Week that ended yesterday.This was revealed by the State Minister for Energy and Water, Coletha Ruhamya, in her presentation after taking part in the monthly communal work (Umuganda) which also saw residents of Busanza and Karama Cells, Kicukiro District, get access to clean water.

About 672, 500 families nationwide have been connected to clean water with the new water supply and sanitation installations put in place during commemoration of the Water Week that ended yesterday.

This was revealed by the State Minister for Energy and Water, Coletha Ruhamya, in her presentation after taking part in the monthly communal work (Umuganda) which also saw residents of Busanza and Karama Cells, Kicukiro District, get access to clean water.

"It has cost Rwf 12.7 billion to put in place these water facilities. We also engaged in various hygienic activities,” Ruhamya explained.

Karama and Busanza, with a population of 5,300 and 7,200 respectively, have been facing difficulties getting clean water.

"I am now a happy man since water is just around my compound. It will relieve me from walking all the way to Nyarugunga Sector, where I had to fetch it,” Simon Hakizimana, 50, a resident said.
 
Four public water points were installed while 40 homes got access to clean water from a project that aims at connecting 370 more  households. 
The water supply line that connects Karama Sector comes from Nyarugunga, work that cost Rwf 26 million according to).

 "We are committed to work with you (residents) so that even electric lines get here as well,” said Yves Muyange, the Director General of the Energy, Water and Sanitation Authority (EWASA.

According to Muyange, residents actively contributed towards the works.
The Mayor of Kicukiro, Paul Jules Ndamage, called upon residents to take it as a personal responsibility of keeping these facilities in good working conditions.

Meanwhile, the community work was, among others, attended by the Minister of Environment and Lands, Stanislas Kamanzi, the Director General of REMA, Rose Mukankomeje, and Alphonse Nizeyimana, Kigali city vice-Mayor in charge of Finance and Economic development.
