The National Coordinator of Forum for African Women Educationalists (FAWE), Rwanda chapter, Donatha Gihana, has said that her organisation is committed to promote the education of girls.

She made the remarks yesterday during a stakeholders meeting — organised by FAWE in partnership with the Ministry of Education and UNICEF — to disseminate the national girls’ education policy.

"Girls’ education is the heart of FAWE’s activities, so whatever we are working on, we are committed to promote it,” she said.

FAWE is a non-profit membership organization that brings together people involved in promoting female education.

Gihana stressed that the policy was adopted in 2008 to help solve the issues that obstruct girls from excelling in schools by training teachers and education managers on gender issues, among others.

"We are working closely with the Ministry of Education in terms of implementing policies and carrying out advocacy on the promotion of the girls’ education,” she noted.

Janet Bakunzi Nakato, the Acting Coordinator Basic Education in the ministry, said that the policy dissemination sessions were held at district-level and targeted district officials in charge of education, Vice Mayors in charge of social affairs and head of the schools

"Our wish is to see girls educated and transiting from one level of education to another and reach the level of getting PHDs like their brothers do,” she stated.

She added that girls have been sensitised and most of them understand the value of education.
Bakunzi hailed FAWE for doing a great job in promoting girls’ education through sensitizing the population on the need for providing education to children irrespective of gender.

At the forum, participants discussed and shared ideas on community outreach programmes aimed at creating awareness about the National Girls’ Education Policy.
