HOSTS Rwanda got their campaign off strongly in the Zone five qualifiers after walloping Burundi 3 sets to nil at Amahoro indoor stadium last evening.

The national side were favourities to win the tie after gaining the initial advantage from the fact that the Burundians arrived 90 minutes before kickoff, and they lived up to the pre-match hype by white washing the largely youthful Burundi side.

Paul Bitok’s team won the one-sided fixture 25-16, 25-17, 25-17 in one hour and fifteen minutes against a Burundi side that inevitably was suffering from fatigue.

In the opening match of the shortened tournament, Kenya overwhelmed Uganda three sets to nil (25-16, 25-17, 25-17)in what largely also a one-sided match that excited the sparse crowd at the game.

Action continues today when Rwanda’s Kenyan coach Bitok takes on his countrymen in a match that promises to bring out the best from the two tournament favourites.

In the build-up to the tournament, former Kenyan international, Bitok had already penciled out his compatriots as Rwanda’s main obstacle in the 4-day tourney. Today’s other match will pit then two winless teams, Burundi against Uganda.

The Zone Five championship also double as a qualifier for the 2011 All Africa Games slated for September in Maputo, Mozambique.
