Dear Editor,

No one can exactly guarantee that an earthquake will never hit Rwanda again. The recent earthquake that struck the Districts of Rusizi and Nyamasheke in the Western Province left over 40 people dead and many homeless. It is against such a catastrophe that the department of disaster preparedness needs to be alert and put in place measures which will reduce or prevent the numerous loss of lives and property.

Precautionary measures include; installing detective devices which monitor the prior occurrence of an earthquakes such that, when a signal of an earthquake threat is given, people are informed in time to evacuate together with their property to safe areas.

Fragile objects should be fastened, tall and heavy furniture anchored to the wall or floor to prevent them from turning over. Fire extinguishers and first aid kits should also be put in place in case of a fire outbreak during the quake.

It is also important that residents and landlords insure their houses so that they will have nothing to lose if a catastrophe ever destroyed their property.

In the 21st centaury, people require to devise means of minimising disastrous effects upon lives and property. After all, the required technology is available.
