KARONGI- The body of Innocent Ndahimana, 31, who went missing three days ago, was yesterday discovered floating on the shores of Lake Kivu in Bwishyura sector, Karongi district.

Upon discovery, the residents identified Ndahimana as a Genocide survivor from Bisesero.

He had reportedly come for treatment at Kibuye Hospital in Karongi town and was last seen on Friday evening.

Ndahimana’s body was retrieved from the lake and appeared to have been hacked around the head.

"By the look of the body, it appears that Ndahimana was murdered and his body dumped into the lake, but the motive of the murder is not yet clear,” police said.

The incident occurred two weeks to the 17th commemoration of the Genocide against the Tutsi.

Janvier Forongo, the Executive Secretary of the umbrella organisation of Genocide Survivors (IBUKA) condemned the incident.

"It is very sad that any Rwandan; whether a Genocide survivor or not, can be killed in such a brutal way. It’s very unfortunate especially that it’s close to the commemoration period,” Forongo said.

He noted that police is working closely with the local population to track down the killers.
