KIGALI - All thatched housing in the Kigali city districts - Kicukiro, Gasabo and Nyarugenge  - will be history by the end of this month.

In an interview with The New Times, John Karamage, the Coordinator of Infrastructure and Land Bureau in Gasabo, said that the district is putting final touches on the houses to be given to vulnerable beneficiaries.

"We are doing all we can to complete the construction of the houses and resettle the beneficiaries by the end of this month,” Karamage said.

At the beginning of the programme in December last year, Gasabo had 1,474 thatched houses. By yesterday, Karamage said that 977 decent houses were complete while the rest were under construction,” he added.

For the families that will still be living in thatched houses by the end of this month, the district will rent for them decent housing,” Karamage disclosed.

Paul Jules Ndamage, the Mayor of Kicukiro, said that the houses will be ready by the end of this month. "We are now fitting in windows and doors which I hope will be complete by next week,” Ndamage noted.
Solange Mukasonga, the Mayor of Nyarugenge, said that all the 64 houses are currently under construction.

"There are some houses which will be complete by the end of this month,” Mukasonga said. "But we hope to complete all the houses mid-next month because we need also to build toilets and a kitchen for each house,” she added.

Thatched houses in Nyarugenge are in Mageragere and Kanyinya sectors only.

The government set  a deadline of May to have eliminated Nyakatsi across the country.

By mid January, there were about 45,000 Nyakatsi in the whole country, down from 71,000 in December last year.
