The Senate president, Dr Vincent Biruta, has said that the legislature plays a major role in strengthening the socio-economic ties between the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Rwanda.

Biruta made the remarks during a meeting with the DRC’s Ambassador to Rwanda, Norbert Nkulu Kilombo Mutumba at his office in Kimihurura, on Friday.

He said that consistent meetings between Rwandan and DRC’s officials will strengthen the socio-economic ties between both countries, adding that the legislative bodies have a crucial role to play in maintaining and promoting regional peace and economic development.

Citing the just concluded CEPGL meeting of Parliamentary Speakers in Kigali, Biruta said that such forums were important for understanding and cooperation in collectively forging the way forward as well as fighting security threats in the region.

Ambassador Mutumba, whose visit aimed at discussing various bi-lateral issues, delivered a message from his parliamentarians.

"My country’s heads of parliament were pleased with the treatment they received during their stay in Kigali, the way the meeting was held, and exclusively the message by President Kagame while opening it (CEPGL meeting)” said Mutumba. 

The two described relations between the two countries and their citizens as healthy.

Dr Biruta assured the envoy of cooperation from the Parliament during his stay in Rwanda.
